On January 4, 2025, the Eaton Fire tore through Altadena, razing homes and erasing generations of Black and Brown wealth. Award‑winning filmmaker Ondi Timoner was overseas when her house burned. She returned to “paradise”, reduced to ash, and found neighbors living in cars and fighting banks and insurers who’d sooner walk away than make them whole.

Timoner’s response? Pick up a camera. In just nine months, she transformed the wreckage into “All the Walls Came Down,” a 39-minute short that’s equal parts heartbreak and rallying cry. The film chronicles not only her family’s loss but also the greater inequity exposed by the blaze. As Altadena activist Heavenly Hughes pointedly tells Timoner in the movie, “You moved into a Black community, we’re not a priority”. West Altadena never got fire trucks; wealthier neighborhoods did. Insurance payouts differ wildly. Predatory lenders use reverse mortgages to push elders off their land.

Yet this story isn’t about victimhood; it’s about fight. Hughes and the grassroots group My TRIBE Rise are leading an “Altadena Not For Sale” movement to preserve community property and resist gentrification. At rallies, neighbors share food, trade supplies, and vow to rebuild. Timoner’s film shows how these bonds have strengthened. Even as the fire’s embers cool, the walls—economic, racial, bureaucratic—are still burning down.
